India's most prestigious civilian award for social work - Karmaveer Puraskaar 2010 presented

New Delhi: November 26, 2010:

Ctrl S & iCONGO (Indian Confederation of NGOs) today presented the 5th Annual KARMAVEER PURASKAAR recognising INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS who are pivotal in leading a change, beyond their business, by being committed at individual levels to work on social issues. Mrs. Meera Sanyal, Mr. Pradeep Gupta, and Mr. T K Mathew were the guests of honour at the award ceremony that commemorated the day the citizens of India adopted the constitutional pledge in 1949 and is today India's National Social Justice and Citizen Action Day.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jeroninio Almeida, Founder and Chief Volunteer, iCONGO said, "The awards venerate the efforts of individual citizens who have contributed to social justice & action by going beyond BUSINESS as USUAL and being the change that they want to see in the world. THE UNSUNG HEROES who believe in action against apathy and choose to light the proverbial candle".

This year's jury comprised of some of the most respected individuals from various sectors along with some past awardees, who conducted thorough assessment and research under the vigilance of the founders and audit and process partners. This year the Jury included Dr. Jayashree Pandaya, Dr. Lalit Kumar, Mallika Dutt, Armando Gonsalves, Dr. Chinkholal Thangsing. The Karmaveer Puraskaar 2010 saw 59 responsible and caring citizens in 20 (final number) categories across sectors including Corporate, Media, Government, Civil Society, Art, Fashion, Artistes, Kids and many more. Several Global Citizens were also awarded today for the work they have been doing across the globe. A special Courage of Conviction award was given out this year and from next year onwards this category will be instituted in honour of Ms. Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life trying to save the passengers at the ill fated Pan Am flight. The Karmaveer Chakra, a medallion for voluntary action to bring about a change will be awarded to several Conscious citizens and kids at the Conclave tomorrow .

"We would be announcing KARMAYUGA - THE RIGHT EVERY WRONG GENERATION this year where you, as a citizen, can be and lead the CHANGE as our UNSUNG REAL HEROES." Said Mr. Jeroninio Almeida, Founder and Chief Volunteer, iCONGO. Karmayuga is based on the notion of leading the change by being the change yourself. It could be about simple acts like planting trees in one's neighbourhood, feeding milk to stray dogs in the locality, addressing people who eve tease, refusing to pay a bribe to the traffic cop, filing a RTI against some wrongs, donating blood, pledging your organs or anything small or big you may want to do to right a wrong, anytime throughout the year and post the same on the website so that more people follow your example and we reach the tipping point where everyone gets together to RIGHT every WRONG.

Also present on the occasion Mr .P Sridhar Reddy, Chairman & Managing Director, CtrlS Datacenters Ltd said "Since CtrlS is into the business of providing security to firms from across the globe to protect their data and information intelligence, it has partnered with Karmaveer as we found synergies to encourage citizen heroes with integrity and courage of conviction, who are the protectors of society and democratic values in our nation."

The Karmaveer Puraskaar is a part of iCongo's 'RIGHT every WRONG' movement to build citizen action for social justice. This year's conclave aims to present a knowledge forum that creates "Citizen Thought Leadership" by building social awareness on GLOBAL PEACE. Eminent and concerned citizens like Dr. Lalit Kumar, DV Rao, Anita Pratap, Angeli Kapoor, Gopal Karunakaran, etc will be addressing pertinent issues like nuclear disarmament, global awareness and mutual acceptance -need for a single religion and other related aspects at the conclave.
